Come Brew with Us on May 7th!

Did you know, homebrewing didn’t always used to be a thing? At least not a legal thing. Lots of people brewed beer at home during Prohibition. But even after its repeal in 1933, homebrewing remained technically illegal according to Federal Law. It wasn’t until 1978, when President Carter signed HR 1337 – a transportation bill, of all things – that homebrewing became legal.
In 1988 the American Homebrewers Association declared May 7th “National Homebrew Day” to celebrate this great hobby of ours, and Congressman David Skaggs of Colorado read a statement before the House recognizing the day and honoring the AHA.
Each year since, the AHA has celebrated National Homebrew Day with “Big Brew.” On the first Saturday in May, home brewers across the country make water hot and mash in! Last year nearly 2500 gallons of beer were brewed in more than 10 countries.
Join BCBS on May 7th for this year’s Big Brew, when we’ll gather on the patio outside Municipal Brew Works to mash in and make beer. MBW will provide hot liquor (water, that is), so we get a jump start on that all important first step. Cheers!
